Crystal Child Theme by Studiopress

The Crystal child theme designed by Brian Gardner has a really nice fresh feel to it, very minimalistic and a subtle use of underlying design elements that can only be noticed when you look carefully. I have always been fond of Studiopress themes and...

Product Features and Benefits

A highly customizable theme, the Crystal theme has an automatic slider on the homepage that rotates up to 5 different images which are all clickable and take a user back to an individual post. Originally created to be a portfolio blog this should appeal to all manner of photographers, designers and the artistic.

One of the cool features about this theme is the number of page layouts. You can choose from 6 different layouts for your content. Giving you a totally versatile blog theme, that shouldn’t look like anyone else’s site if you make some image, and layout changes.

The theme uses a top level navigation system with a portfolio area that is set out in a 4 column layout with each image small on the portfolio page but enlarged when someone clicks on one.

The menu at the top is drop down based, and works surprisingly smooth in internet explorer which is known for having issues with these type of drop down menus.

Compatibility and Code

I tested the theme in Internet explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome and found there were no issues to be found, everything worked smoothly without glitches.

When it comes to plugins, studiopress includes with their themes anything that it needs to run on, though they do produce their own plugins.

I checked the theme to see how valid the XHTML and CSS were and it passed without any errors which was nice to see.

Performance Check

Crystal Theme loads very fast in all of the browsers without any lag and so after running it through Google Speed tool it was no surprise to see it had scored 84/100.  Had it scored 100 it would have been classed as perfectly optimized. At the moment Google is very big on load speeds of websites so it was nice to see that they scored high.

3 Pros – Things that are great about the theme

  • Very minimalistic
  • Professional and made solid
  • Lots of custom page layouts

3 Cons – Things which aren’t too good

  • Would like to see some pre-defined backgrounds
  • Font could be better
  • The portfolio page could have used a look like what elegant themes do with theirs.
