Webly theme by ElegantThemes

Webly theme has a great use of colors. I liked the types of fonts used as well as the rounded off menu at the top. It should appeal to designers who want to tweak it to their liking.

Product Features and Benefits

A really professional looking theme that should provide people with a fun and unique looking design that could be left as is or customized further.

The most prominent feature in this theme is the multimedia slider which allows you to show images or video.

It does make use of a nice portfolio section that when an image is clicked you are presented with a larger version with smaller images of the rest of the gallery below it to make navigating an entire body of work fast and easy.

It has a large sized blog post area which will be perfect for adding in wide images and video. The footer sports a 3 column widgetized area for about, text widgets or blog posts to be displayed.

There is a choice of 6 different page templates which you can assign to any one of your pages such as: gallery, contact, sitemap, blog feed, full width and advanced search

Functionality

Navigation is super easy on this site, You have the top menu, footer menu and the right sidebar once you hit a blog post. It has a drop down menu for child pages/categories.

The portfolio is utterly beautiful. I love the layout and ways of linking to a post from an image or just viewing the image.

With all of the Elegant themes they really make sure that you get a lot of shortcodes which allows you to add elements to your posts and pages just by adding a simple snippet of code like [tab]. There are actually up to sixteen different types of shortcodes which can take complex requirements and simplify them within seconds such as adding:

  • Small buttons
  • Big buttons
  • Context boxes
  • Icon buttons
  • Toggled content
  • Tabbed content
  • Slideshows
  • Image slider
  • Tool tips
  • Social media Icons
  • Password protected content
  • Author information
  • Column layouts
  • Custom icon lists
  • Corporate pricing tables
  • Testimonials
  • Drop caps
  • Quotes

Compatibility and Code

I tested the theme in Internet explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome and while everything loaded fine and functioned well, I still notice a bit of a lag with the drop down menu at the top in internet explorer but I think most sites experience this and it’s not so much the theme but the dreaded internet explorer.

The theme does use a lot of jQuery and from what I was able to determine as they don’t make it clear on the theme. It uses the WP-pagenavi plugin to help with navigation.

I checked the theme to see how valid the XHTML and CSS were and found it had 2 errors.

Performance Check

Overall very quick at loading and after running it through our trusty Google page speed tool I found it scored 60/100 with a few references to areas they could improve on.  Had it scored 100 it would have been classed as perfectly optimized. At the moment Google is very big on load speeds of websites so it was nice to see that they scored high.

3 Pros – Things that are great about the theme

  • Very professional
  • Lots of shortcodes
  • Great portfolio section and gallery

3 Cons – Things which aren’t too good

  • Will require customization
  • Would like to see left sidebar
  • Should be easy way to swap out logo
