Overview

Having both run a news site and bought from Templatic themes myself I can tell you that this site as a news site is full of lots of potential. Knowing what the support is like from Templatic themes I am a little bit uneasy about saying that you’re going to receive outstanding support as I find their support is hit and miss and at times they don’t reply to tickets for up to 4 days.  This news time theme would be specifically for a news site owner but you can use it as a magazine site very easily.

Product Features and Benefits

News Time offers a massive amount of features. You can choose between eight different color schemes which change the navigational highlight as well of the category link colors.

They do provide you with a really nice administrational options panel which makes it super easy to change things that appear on the front end of the website.

If you need to have your site appear in a different language they have built in localization support so that you can translate all of your blog into your language all through the advanced control panel

It gives you a three column site, so left and right sidebars with an automatic sliding featured profile in the middle and places all over the homepage where you can feature certain categories content.

Functionality

A really nice function on the site is its use of drop down category tree in the left sidebar. If you mouse over a parent category it will display any subcategories below that without clicking. This makes a change from many of the tree based navigation models which end up showing all the categories which takes up too much space.

You can have in a post multiple photos showing below the main one as thumbnails and when you click on the photos they enlarge through the use of a lightbox.

There appears to be no option for use of shortcodes in the theme which is disappointing now that most decent themes come with shortcodes that extend and make like easier for the user.

Compatibility and Code

I tested the theme in Internet explorer, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Chrome and found that there were no conflicts with this theme and it appeared and functioned nicely in all of them except Operate where under the Latest News the titles are not appearing correctly. Also in Internet explorer in the right sidebar there are items that are not appearing and instead its showing two red X’s

When it comes to plugins, I was able to find out that it uses a plugin called Download Monitor but that the theme itself is not reliant on that plugin so you are fine.

I checked the theme to see how valid the XHTML and CSS were and it has 7 errors.

Performance Check

It’s a very fast loading theme with everything functioning perfectly. I ran it through Google page speed tool to really get a better idea of good it was and I found it scored 72/100 with a few references to areas they could improve on.  Had it scored 100 it would have been classed as perfectly optimized. At the moment Google is very big on load speeds of websites so it was nice to see that they scored high.

3 Pros – Things that are great about the theme

  • Beautiful looking news site.
  • Can work with magazine, news or any regular blog
  • You can translate the theme into another language using their admin panel

3 Cons – Things which aren’t too good

  • Not the best support even though they say its excellent
  • Known issues with templatic themes being not entirely functional and requiring fixes
  • Lack of shortcodes.
