Overview

I actually nearly bought this theme when it first came out and I still have it on my radar for future purchases as it really is as the title says “Magnificent.”  It’s geared towards those who want to make a magazine site but providing a lot of features but you don’t feel overwhelmed by them. It has this very nice minimalist look to it yet at the same time providing a very easy on the eyes appearance with its use of five different colors throughout the site.  It would appeal to people seeking to create a magazine, news site or the average person wanting just a really nice looking site.

Product Features and Benefits

Magnificent theme gives you a nice, front and center area for your logo and slogan beneath it. It has a top level navigation system with rounded edged dropdowns.  It sports a left and right sidebar providing you with ample amount of room to insert widgets, adsense, advertising, recent posts, comments and whatever else you might want to add to your site.

In the center column below the navigation you have an automatic slider which rotates up to three different images but I’m sure you can add more if required.  Below this your posts are organized into a very unique box style layout that is two columns wide with a pagination option at the bottom.

Your footer provides up to four different columns for recent posts, widgets, archives or recent comments.

Functionality

Magnificent theme arrives widget ready which means you can insert widgets into your sidebars very easily allowing you to add custom html, adsense, adverts or banners.  If you want to add thumbnails to your posts you will be using a script which is included in the theme called Timthumb which automatically resizes the images. The readme and their videos will show you how to use that.

You can add advertising blocks throughout your site by either including the code in the options area in the admin or through widgets.

As with all Elegant themes they make good use of shortcodes which allows you with ease to add elements to your posts and pages just by adding a simple snippet of code like [ tab ]. There are actually up to sixteen different types of shortcodes which can take complex requirements and simplify them within seconds such as adding:

  • Small buttons
  • Big buttons
  • Context boxes
  • Icon buttons
  • Toggled content
  • Tabbed content
  • Slideshows
  • Image slider
  • Tool tips
  • Social media Icons
  • Password protected content
  • Author information
  • Column layouts
  • Custom icon lists
  • Corporate pricing tables
  • Testimonials
  • Drop caps
  • Quotes

Compatibility and Code

I tested the theme in Internet explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and Chrome and everything ran smooth with the slider and navigation and I am pleased to say there was no issues that stood out with internet explorer which is unusual and a good sign that this has been created professionally.

When it comes to plugins, I was able to determine that it makes use of jquery and one plugin called WP-Pagenavi. This is a free plugin that you can download but I believe Elegant provides plugins with it.

I checked the theme to see how valid the XHTML and CSS were and it had 5 errors and 4 warnings.

Performance Check

Another really fast loading theme from Elegant themes. I took it through a run with Google page speed tool to really get a better idea of good it was and I found it scored 78/100 with a few references to areas they could improve on.  Had it scored 100 it would have been classed as perfectly optimized. At the moment Google is very big on load speeds of websites so it was nice to see that they scored high.

3 Pros – Things that are great about the theme

  • Beautiful use of colors and design. Makes for a really nice theme
  • The right and left sidebars
  • Epanel on the backend making it user friendly and beautifully functional.

3 Cons – Things which aren’t too good

  • No option to just have 1 sidebar
  • Not mobile friendly
  • Can’t just purchase the one theme you have to join their membership.
