Obox – Theme Designer Review

Obox-design is a membership based theme site. You have a choice between purchasing a single template or becoming a member for a set price and then having access to their entire theme collection.

Obox-design was originally created back in 2005 in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa. They initially started designing sites using Coldfusion but closer to the end of 2008 they shifted towards WordPress. Obox design officially kicked off in July of 2009 and has David Perel at the wheel of all design and his brother Marc Perel covering development.

How does Obox Design Work?

Obox-design is a membership based theme site. You have a choice between purchasing a single template or becoming a member for a set price and then having access to their entire theme collection.

If you go with a single theme it’s going to cost you $50 for any of the WordPress themes and $19 for any of the Posterous and Tumblr themes. If you want to get technical and have access to layered images for customizing the appearance easily then you would need to go with the developer pack which costs $100 and is only available for WordPress themes.

If you opt for the membership, you’re looking at paying $125 up front and then $15 every month for continued access to new themes that are being added. This is a pretty good price and gives you a lot more for your money.

The four main elements that obox-design has tried to stick to are:

  • Incredible design – They provide very professional looking themes that stand out from the crowd and are geared towards all the major areas of business such as blogging, portfolio, business, and media and magazines sites.
  • Attention to detail – All their premium themes have an extreme attention to detail, so that you don’t have to spend your time trying to fiddle around with areas of a site.
  • Quality of coding and functionality – They have focused on creating custom features and all the code is documented so you know where and what to change.
  • Support – They offer a way for people who have free themes to contact them via email but if you search a little bit more in their site they make it clear under the support section that they cannot offer support via email and that is what the forum is for. The forum is supported by the brothers. So essentially you are getting your questions answered just in a different way.

What Themes Does Obox-Design Have?

While the majority of their themes are focused at the WordPress community they have tackled another blogging platform called Posterous which was created back in 2008. They also provide themes for Tumblr. So they really do provide a nice well rounded selection to choose from.

WordPress Themes (44 themes)

  • Magazine Themes
  • Blogging Themes
  • Business Themes
  • Video Blogging Themes
  • Photography Themes
  • Free Themes
  • News Themes
  • Portfolio

Tumblr Themes (10 themes)

Posterous Themes (8 themes)

  • Portfolio Themes

Quality of Themes

They certainly have a lot of choice when it comes to themes in the WordPress category, whereas the other 2 categories are still a little bit thin.

The quality is not bad; yet again it’s nothing to phone home about. There is a lot of room for them putting out some themes which sets them apart from all the other WordPress themes that are filling up the marketplace.

Right now one of the key issues facing WordPress themes is being unique. Most are following the same structure and while that is fine for getting a site down, it doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

  • Cover WordPress, Tumblr and Posterous
  • 2 for 1 deal is nice
  • Easy to navigate their site

  • Not as Unique as other theme companies
  • Some themes were laggy in internet explorer
  • No email support

Theme Support

When it comes to the type of support that they provide, they offer a variety of options such as

    Theme Documentation
    Support Forums
Modifiers ( people who will modify your theme )
    Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/oboxthemes
    Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/OboxThemes?v=app_4949752878

The lack of email support shouldn’t come across as being something too bad as they are only a two man company and if they spent their time answering email they wouldn’t have time to develop themes. So I would advise if their forums aren’t providing much help, contact them via twitter.
